Lung association receives OHA award
The Office of Hawaiian Affairs has awarded $40,000 to the American Lung Association in Hawaii for its Maopopo Oli Hano program, a school-based asthma education and management program on Oahu, Maui and Hawaii Island.
Maopopo Oli Hano is a three-part asthma education program designed for Native Hawaiians. The first component focuses on educating children ages 8 to 11 diagnosed with asthma. The second component focuses on educating teachers, school personnel and caregivers. The third component focuses on educating parents and guardians, making asthma management and education a team effort.
This grant is one of 16 community grants totaling $1.45 million awarded by OHA in December.
DOFAW council
seeks applicants
The Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service, is accepting applications for vacant seats on the Laupahoehoe and Puuwaawaa advisory councils.
The Laupahoehoe Advisory Council is seeking applicants to fill its open scientific research seat. These applicants should have a background in forest ecology or other natural resources-related research field and an interest in serving the Laupahoehoe community as a representative.
The Puuwaawaa Advisory Council is seeking applicants to fill two positions: neighboring landowner and grazing specialist. All applicants should have an appropriate background in the category area, as well as an interest in representing community stakeholders related to their respective categories.

Cummings to perform free concert Sunday
The Dragonfly Ranch in South Kona is hosting a free CD release party for singer and songwriter Millicent Cummings from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Cummings, joined by cellist Nelson Denman, will perform songs from her new CD, “Compassionate Heart.”

Military convoys
taking to roads
Oahu-based military units will convoy from Pohakuloa Training Area to Kawaihae Harbor between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. today through Sunday and May 9 to 13 via Saddle Road, Mamalahoa Highway, Waikoloa Road, Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Kawaihae Road.
The convoys will not have Hawaii Police Department escorts. The first and last vehicle in each convoy will have rotating lights on their roofs, as well as convoy warning signs. Motorists are advised to be alert and drive with care.
The PTA Department of Army police is working closely with local authorities and military units to coordinate this activity in support of unit training.

North Hawaii community invited to talk story with Case
Residents of North Hawaii are invited to a casual Waimea Pau Hana Talk Story with former Congressman Ed Case, candidate for U.S. Senate, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday at Waimea Middle School in classroom K-06, behind the school office.
Everyone is invited, there is no charge and light refreshments will be served.

Solomon plans community meetings
State Sen. Malama Solomon is inviting residents in her Hawaii Island senatorial district to attend one of a series of community meetings to discuss projects and policies that respond to community concerns and priorities to benefit the district.
Staff members of several state departments, including the state Departments of Agriculture, Land and Natural Resources, Transportation, Education, Hawaiian Home Lands, University of Hawaii and Hawaii Healthcare Systems Corp., will join Solomon to answer questions and discuss program implementation timing and strategies.

Seniors invited to beginner’s yoga
Hawaii County’s Elderly Recreation Services will hold a beginner’s yoga workshop during May for anyone aged 55 and older. The workshop teaches a series of gentle stretches and breathing techniques that relax the body and mind and help reduce stress.
Classes are held at 9 a.m. Monday, May 14 and 21 at Hale Halawai and at 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 15 and 22 at Yano Hall. Each series of classes costs $10 and preregistration is requested.

Thai cooking made
easy class is Tuesday
Abbey Golden teaches a Thai food cooking class from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hale Halawai in Kailua-Kona. Golden will demonstrate how to make an easy Thai meal participants can make at home. She will make a vegetarian pad Thai, chicken larb lettuce wraps and a refreshing pickled cucumber condiment.
The $15 fee includes recipes and food tasting.

Free estate planning seminars set in

The Salvation Army is offering a free seminar to help people understand how they can benefit from estate planning and charitable giving. The “Lunch and Learn” seminar runs from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at The Salvation Army Kona Corps, 75-223 Kalani St., Kailua-Kona, and from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at The Salvation Army Honokaa Corps, 45-511 Rickard Place, Honokaa.
Topics Kimberly Jackson and John Roth, attorneys at law, and gift planner Ellen Kazama will explain include financial and gift planning, tax law changes and structure and benefits of a living trust.

Community support services for Tuesday town meeting
A Kona Town Meeting is planned from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Makaeo Events Pavilion at Old Kona Airport Park.
The topic for the meeting and discussion is community support services. Scheduled speakers are Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii Executive Director Patrick Hurney, Special Olympics West Hawaii Area Director Dave Ross, Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii’s Big Island Executive Director Malia Louis, Hope Services Hawaii Director Brandee Menino and A Hui Hou Ministries President Penny Brumbaugh.
The meetings are presented by Community Enterprises, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, to provide information on community concerns to citizens. Light refreshments will be served.
